New Jersey Transit's GP40FH-2 units were rebuilt from GP40s at Conrail's Juniata Locomotive Shops as cowl units. Some of the cowls came from BN F45 units, while others were custom-fabricated at Juniata.
Units #4130-#4134 were retired in 2006 and rebuilt by Wabtech/MPI into MP20GP switcher units. Several other units were leased to AMT in 2008.
