Amtrak's initial order for E60 electric locomotives was for two types, the E60CH, which had HEP capability, and the E60CP, which included a steam generator. Several of the E60CP units were leased out and/or sold in the early 1980s. In the late '80s, several of the remaining E60CP units had their steam generators replaced with HEP generators, and along with the E60CH units were rebuilt as E60MA units and renumbered.
